German towns use SMS to control street lights.
Some German towns have begun using SMS to control their streetlights. This results in large energy cost savings. The system automatically turns streetlights off, and requires citizens to send an SMS to a central number to turn on specific streetlights for up to 60 minutes.
In one particular town, the system has resulted in a annual saving of over 4000 EUR. Other cities in Germany are trailing a similar system that uses a consumer’s mobile credits to pay for the lighting. Streetlight time is priced the same as mobile minutes, so that citizens can get an hour of light for the same price as an hour of phone calls.

SMS Lighting up Germany
A town in Germany is testing a new mobile SMS application. Many towns turn off their steet lamps at 11pm to conserve energy, although its not the best idea for pedestrians one town in particular has saved 50.000 euros a year. The mobile application means that towns in Germany can still save energy and get home safely in the dark.
This new service is called Dial4light it means pedestrians can send an SMS to the GSM Modem in the junction box of the streetlight. This mobile application is currently being tested with the public and is yet to be tried on emergency services who could illuniminate the scene, taxi drivers could light the path for their passengers and joggers who could turn on the floodlights at the sports field.

German SMS Growing Rapidly
SMS stands for Short Message Service a special digital text service for wireless phones. Although it’s neither a German word nor a German idea, the Germans have taken to SMS in greater numbers than any other country. So far, about three-quarters of a million German mobile phone users have become SMS fans and an entire SMS-industry has popped up in Germany over the past few years.
There are SMS Web sites in various languages that provide both free and fee-based SMS services, allowing customers to send a text message of up to 160 characters that displays on the screen of a wireless phone. Typing on most cell phones is a rather awkward task, these online SMSs, particularly in Germany, have become popular by offering ready made messages that can be sent via the Internet with just a few key clicks. European wireless phone users do not pay for incoming calls or messages; the caller pays. A typical SMS costs from 10 to 20 euro cents. But the real solution may be spoken SMS: Samsung has released a cell phone for Cingular that can send text messages from speech!
